A recent shooting incident at a Dallas high school has left the community in shock after a 17-year-old suspect opened fire on four students. The suspect managed to enter Wilmer-Hutchins High School, which is equipped with metal detectors, at approximately 1:01 p.m. on Tuesday. Entry was facilitated by another student who opened a locked side door, according to the Dallas Independent School District police Chief, Albert Martinez. The entire episode, from entry to exit, lasted less than two minutes, with the suspect targeting a specific student.
The suspect was apprehended several hours later and is currently held on a charge of aggravated assault mass shooting. The police chief noted that while there was a “dispute taking place,” the precise motivation behind the shooting remains unclear. Investigations are ongoing to determine the degree of involvement of the student who allowed the suspect access to the building.
All four male students who were shot have been transported to hospitals, and officials report that they are expected to recover fully. In the wake of the shooting, a significant police presence was observed on the campus, which serves approximately 1,000 students. According to an arrest warrant, the suspect parked his vehicle at the school just before the incident, and after gaining entry, proceeded to fire “indiscriminately” before approaching one student and taking a point-blank shot.
The suspect’s bond has been set at $600,000, and as of now, jail records do not list an attorney for him. This tragic event follows a similar incident at the same school last April, where one student shot another in the leg.
