Delta Flights to Atlanta Face Hours-Long Tarmac Delays After Diversion

Two Delta Air Lines flights destined for Atlanta faced significant delays on the tarmac at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama due to customs complications after being rerouted because of adverse weather conditions. Thunderstorms across the Southeast United States prompted the diversion on Thursday evening. Delta Air Lines acknowledged the service disruption, offering an apology and full booking refunds to all affected passengers.

The flights, originating from international locations, were expected to arrive in Atlanta by Friday morning, having been stationed in Montgomery since the previous night. The delay impacted passengers who had anticipated a timely arrival in Atlanta. Notably, Flight 1828 from Cabo San Lucas, carrying 150 passengers, was slated to land at approximately 8:10 p.m. but was instead redirected to Montgomery, arriving at around 10:30 p.m.

Severe weather conditions, including lightning and windshear, necessitated the change in route, according to Delta. Passengers were unable to disembark for several hours due to the lack of Customs and Border Protection personnel at Montgomery Regional Airport, a requisite for international arrivals.

A similar scenario unfolded for Delta Flight 599, with 147 passengers on board, traveling from Mexico City to Atlanta. This flight also diverted to Montgomery, landing at approximately 10:20 p.m. Despite the plane doors being opened, passengers remained on board due to prolonged bad weather and crew time limits being exceeded.

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport was deemed unsuitable for rerouting due to its own severe weather issues. In response to this incident, Delta is undertaking a comprehensive review to identify improvements and prevent future occurrences.
