A man has been formally charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a hazardous incident over the weekend on Interstate 91 near Windsor. The incident unfolded when the driver was observed traveling in the wrong direction before eventually veering off into a grassy area near an exit ramp as a state trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The Connecticut State Police reported that the series of events began early Saturday morning at 2:08 a.m. when they were alerted to an erratic driver in a red SUV. The vehicle, notably without its lights, was seen swerving across the lanes of I-91 North around Exit 35. Utilizing the state Department of Transportation cameras, law enforcement was able to track the vehicle and observed the driver maneuvering across multiple lanes.
The driver subsequently executed a U-turn on the highway, proceeding to travel in the wrong direction. However, upon reaching the Exit 37 on-ramp, the driver turned around again and re-entered I-91 North in the correct direction. A state trooper, responding to the situation, located the vehicle shortly thereafter and activated emergency lights and siren to initiate a stop near Exit 38. Despite slowing down and seemingly moving towards the exit, the driver steered into the gore area, a space between the highway and the exit ramp, before attempting to return to the highway.
State police released dashboard camera footage showing the vehicle’s tires struggling for traction in the wet grass as it headed back toward the highway. The vehicle reportedly collided with highway signposts prior to halting on the right shoulder. The trooper instructed the driver to turn off the engine and place the keys outside the vehicle, which the driver complied with.
The driver was identified as 41-year-old William Chretien from West Springfield, Massachusetts. Authorities noted that Chretien exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, red glossy eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol. After failing field sobriety tests, Chretien was taken into custody. A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol content to be above the legal driving limit.
Chretien faces multiple charges, including reckless driving, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to maintain proper lane on a limited access highway, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, illegal entry onto a limited access highway, and failure to display lights. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance in Hartford Superior Court on April 24.
The Tangible Impact
Incidents involving impaired driving such as this highlight significant concerns for public safety on roadways. For residents and commuters in the Windsor area and beyond, it underscores the importance of remaining vigilant while driving and reporting erratic behavior to authorities. This event serves as a potent reminder of the risks associated with driving under the influence and the potential consequences it holds not just for the driver but for other innocent road users.
Furthermore, the efforts of state police in promptly addressing such situations demonstrate the critical role law enforcement plays in maintaining safety and order on highways. It also sheds light on the necessity for continuous public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of DUI laws to deter similar incidents. The broader community impact involves recognizing the need for responsible behavior and adherence to traffic laws to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users.
