Duke University’s standout player, Cooper Flagg, is set to enter the NBA, emerging as the frontrunner to be the top overall draft pick. The announcement came through a social media post by the program on Monday, following Flagg’s impressive single college season. The 18-year-old has earned the distinction of being only the fourth freshman to be named the national player of the year while leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four.
Flagg, who reclassified to join Duke a year earlier than expected, had long been anticipated to make his move to the professional league. Despite keeping his future plans under wraps throughout the season, his transition to the NBA was a foregone conclusion. During his time at Duke, Flagg highlighted the enjoyable experience he had playing college basketball.
The versatile 6-foot-9 forward from Newport, Maine, demonstrated his prowess on the court, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals per game. He led the Blue Devils in all these categories, showcasing his scoring, playmaking, and defensive skills.
Duke’s head coach expressed admiration for Flagg’s incredible freshman season, noting his impact on the game in various areas. Beyond his statistics, Flagg was celebrated for his demeanor and teamwork, contributing significantly to the team’s environment and success.
Flagg’s season highlights included a record-setting performance, with 42 points against Notre Dame in January, marking an Atlantic Coast Conference freshman record. He also delivered a standout game with 30 points, six rebounds, and seven assists to help Duke overcome Arizona in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. Despite a strong showing, Flagg’s season concluded with a 27-point and seven-rebound performance in a loss to Houston during the national semifinals. The Blue Devils, who had a 14-point lead with under nine minutes remaining, were overtaken in the final moments, with Houston scoring the last nine points in the closing seconds.
