Ex-Kettering Music Teacher Admits Guilt in Child Pornography Case

A former music teacher from Kettering is now facing a potential prison sentence ranging from six to 18 months for each count, following a scheduled sentencing on May 16. Previously slated for trial, this development follows a series of legal proceedings surrounding charges related to child pornography.

Initially employed by Kettering City Schools in 2012, the individual worked at Fairmont High School, leading or assisting with various music and choir groups. According to records from the district, his employment came under scrutiny when, on November 19, 2023, a 19-year-old reported inappropriate conduct, which allegedly began when the complainant was in middle school. The allegations included exchanges of texts with a sexual nature. The school district responded by placing the teacher on administrative leave the following day.

The teacher was formally indicted on June 12, 2024, and initially pleaded not guilty on June 27, coinciding with his resignation from the school district. In August 2024, he entered a guilty plea to four of six felony charges as part of a plea agreement. However, he later retracted these pleas in October, ahead of his scheduled sentencing.

In response to the charges, the defense has emphasized that the allegations do not pertain to the teacher’s role within the school. The defense attorney clarified that the materials in question were located on personal devices, including a phone and computer, with no involvement of school-related individuals.

As part of the legal agreement, the former teacher will be designated as a Tier II sex offender. This designation restricts him from residing within 1,000 feet of any school, preschool, or daycare facility. Additionally, he must register his address biannually for a period of 25 years.

The defense has expressed a commitment to presenting their case to the court, emphasizing that they were unable to reach a consensus with the prosecution and thus proceeded with the charges as filed.
