An unfortunate accident involving a school bus on Interstate 77 South in Chester County resulted in the death of a student. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. near Exit 55 (Highway 97), leading to the closure of all southbound lanes. The buses involved were from the Lexington County Schools District 2, transporting students from Pine Ridge Middle School. The students were on their way back from a field trip to the NASCAR Hall of Fame when a tire blowout caused the bus to collide with a guardrail and overturn.
A vigil was held at Pine Ridge Middle School on Friday morning, where a school board member confirmed the student’s death. Although the school is on spring break, officials plan to have counselors available for students. Emergency services and fire teams swiftly responded to the scene, with five medical helicopters also assisting in the rescue efforts. Approximately 35 students and four adults were transported for further medical evaluation, including individuals from two other buses that managed to avoid the crash.
Hunter Pringle from the Chester County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged multiple injuries but did not provide specifics. The other buses proceeded to Fairfield County to reunite with parents. In the aftermath, a parent, Tiffany Porterfield, shared her relief after receiving a reassuring message from her son involved in the accident.
Another student, Wesley Willis, recounted the chaotic moments during the crash, expressing fear as the bus swerved and strangers assisted them afterward. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster expressed his condolences, stating that the tragedy is something no family should endure and extended prayers to the victims, their families, and the Lexington Two community.
