Executive Summary
Laws and Precedent
A Davenport man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of possessing child sexual abuse material, according to an announcement Tuesday from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Mauricio Flores, 36, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison if convicted on the charge.
The indictment alleges that Flores possessed the illicit material and notifies him that federal prosecutors intend to forfeit a cellphone allegedly used to commit the offense. According to court documents, investigators discovered the files containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the device.
The Investigation
The charges stem from an investigation that led to a search warrant at Flores’s Davenport residence. Authorities stated the search was connected to activity on a dark web site known for the distribution of CSAM. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) led the investigation into the case.
Part of a Nationwide Initiative
This case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative established by the Department of Justice in 2006. The program aims to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse through a coordinated law enforcement response across the country.
Assistant United States Attorney Muriel Moore will prosecute the case. It is important to note that an indictment is a formal accusation, and every defendant, including Flores, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
