FDLE Probes Fatal Deputy-Involved Shooting in Deerfield Beach

Deerfield Beach, FL – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is currently investigating a fatal shooting involving a deputy that took place on Wednesday night in Deerfield Beach.

The incident unfolded around 9:23 p.m. when Broward County Regional Communications received a 911 call reporting a disturbance involving an armed woman. The caller indicated that the woman, identified as 28-year-old Santrina Lester from Pompano Beach, had pointed a gun at someone in the vicinity of 2060 N.E. Second Street.

Deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded promptly to the scene and located Lester inside a vehicle. Despite receiving commands from the deputies to refrain from doing so, Lester brandished a firearm. The situation escalated both inside and outside the vehicle, prompting multiple deputies to discharge their weapons.

Lester was hit during the exchange, after which deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures and performed CPR until Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived. Lester was then transported to Broward Health North, where she was pronounced dead.

A firearm was recovered at the scene near Lester. Additionally, one deputy sustained an injury during the incident but is expected to recover.

The FDLE is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. In accordance with Broward Sheriff’s Office policy, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
