A 60-year-old man is facing a series of charges following the disruption of an alleged cockfighting operation in southwest Miami-Dade over the weekend. Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire near Southwest 125th Street and 194th Avenue around 7 p.m. on Saturday, where they arrested Angel Garcia and three other individuals. Upon arrival, deputies observed numerous vehicles rapidly departing and individuals fleeing the scene, some carrying “game fowl roosters.”
Authorities utilized a marked patrol vehicle to block the property’s sole access point, instructing those present to remain on site. Aviation units and additional deputies swiftly established a perimeter as several individuals attempted to escape on foot, traversing fences into neighboring areas. All individuals present were detained while deputies conducted a safety sweep, prompted by the initial gunfire reports.
Inside the premises, authorities discovered a makeshift training ring accompanied by spectator seating, alongside numerous caged roosters, some exhibiting shaved feathers. The area resonated with the crowing of enclosed roosters. Garcia was apprehended on the property after allegedly trying to elude capture, though he remained silent once taken into custody. The other detained individuals were identified as Rodolfo Soto Longo and Amaury Martinez, both 45, and Junior Lara, 49.
Garcia is facing charges including illegal possession of animals for fighting, breeding, baiting, training, selling or owning, animal cruelty with intent to injure or kill, and attending an illegal animal fight. As of Monday afternoon, he was held on a $12,500 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Soto Longo, Martinez, and Lara were not listed on the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation website.
