A tragic mass shooting at Florida State University on Thursday claimed the lives of two individuals, including Robert Morales, a beloved member of the community. Morales, who worked as a dining service employee at the university in Tallahassee, had undergone a kidney transplant in 2021 after facing significant health challenges. His passing has deeply affected his family, including his brother, wife, and daughter, as described in a heartfelt online post.
Authorities have identified the shooter as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, who is believed to be a student at Florida State and the stepson of a sheriff’s deputy. The incident began near the student union around lunchtime, with Ikner reportedly using his stepmother’s former service weapon. Despite the rapid response from law enforcement, which resulted in Ikner being shot and wounded after failing to follow officers’ commands, a motive for the attack has not yet been disclosed.
In addition to the fatalities, five individuals sustained gunshot wounds, while a sixth person was injured while attempting to flee. All injured victims are currently in fair condition at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.
Details regarding the second victim have yet to be released as the investigation continues. The community mourns the loss and extends heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this senseless act of violence.
