An incident on May 8, 2024, in the 200 block of Ross Avenue, led to the tragic death of Roger Douglas Cole Jr., who succumbed to a stab wound, as determined by the Butler County Coroner’s Office. Authorities reported that Cole allegedly attempted to steal a vehicle after its owner had turned away momentarily to bid farewell to a friend, prompting the owner to contact 911. Initially, there was no indication of a confrontation; however, Hamilton police later confirmed that an altercation did occur during Cole’s attempt to seize the vehicle.
Following the incident, Spottedhorse surrendered to authorities and was charged with murder. His bond was set at $1 million. Initially pleading not guilty, Spottedhorse eventually changed his plea to guilty on a revised charge, resulting in the dismissal of two second-degree felonious assault charges.
In a courtroom testimony, Roger Cole, the father of the deceased, expressed skepticism about Spottedhorse’s culpability, stating he did not believe Spottedhorse was responsible for his son’s death. Despite this, he announced his intention to pursue legal action against Spottedhorse, clarifying it was not meant as a threat but as a step towards resolution. He emphasized his determination to find the true perpetrator.
The prosecutor’s office conveyed confidence that the correct individual is being held accountable for the crime committed on May 8. Spottedhorse’s legal representative confirmed the plea decision was made in good faith, highlighting that the day marked his client’s acceptance of responsibility.
Sentencing is set to take place at 9 a.m. on May 19 in Judge McElfresh’s courtroom.
