A tragic accident involving a cyclist and a tour bus has led to the death of a 71-year-old man. The individual, identified as Franz Albert-Ludwig Weber of Kailua-Kona, succumbed to his injuries a week after the incident on the island of Hawaii. The unfortunate event occurred on April 9 at approximately 9:08 a.m. on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway, near the 94.5-mile marker in North Kona.
Weber was riding a Trek bicycle southbound when he collided with a stationary 2015 Motor Coach Industries tour bus parked on the highway shoulder. Emergency responders swiftly attended to Weber’s injuries, initially transporting him to Kona Community Hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to Queens Medical Center, where he passed away on Thursday morning.
The Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
