Last month, a fraternity at Washington State University faced closure due to hazing activities, as detailed on the university’s website. The Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, located at 710 NE Linden St. on the Greek Row in Pullman, has lost its campus recognition until May 2030. The investigation revealed that the fraternity was involved in coercing new members to consume drugs and alcohol, subjecting them to physical activities as punishment for “poor performance,” and assigning cleaning duties for not “meeting expectations.” This behavior fostered a significant power imbalance between newer and older initiated members.
The findings determined that the fraternity violated the university’s student organization policy, engaging in hazing, reckless endangerment, and activities involving alcohol, drugs, and physical harm over the past two years. Upon potential reinstatement in five years, the fraternity will be required to maintain an alcohol-free environment until 2032.
