The investment in state and local funding for the new Workforce Development & Trades Center at Howard Community College has been a significant milestone for Howard County. Officials are optimistic about the center’s completion by June 2026. The project, emphasizing strengthening the local workforce, is supported by $5 million in county funding and $3.6 million from the college, as outlined in the proposed capital budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The state contributes an additional $11.9 million to this substantial effort.
Designed to provide training in essential fields such as manufacturing, automotive technology, green and environmental technology, skilled trades, and cybersecurity, the center aims to equip individuals with the skills required to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. The curriculum development is underway, with plans to incorporate high-tech equipment, allowing students to apply their skills practically. For instance, automotive program participants will gain hands-on experience by performing oil changes.
As Howard County continues to aim for recognition as a leader in the cyber industry, the center is anticipated to play a critical role. The county, home to approximately 300 cyber companies, views this initiative as a pipeline to meet regional and national job demands. The rapid pace of technological advancements necessitates such a center to maintain competitive capabilities.
The inception of a trade center has been a long-standing vision for Howard Community College, with roots tracing back about 45 years. In October 2023, a two-year capital campaign was launched to support the center’s construction, addressing the workforce gap in trades and technical fields. The construction phase, projected to last 18 months, is set to conclude by April 2026, with the building opening to students by June the same year.
This development arrives amid economic uncertainties in Howard County, particularly affecting federal workers facing workforce reductions. Efforts have been intensified to support these workers through career fairs, resource expansion for food insecurity, and business development support. The Workforce Development & Trades Center represents a strategic step to bolster the county’s resilience during challenging economic periods.
While there is a desire for increased federal support, the county remains committed to progressing with state and community college partnerships. The collaboration involves various stakeholders, ensuring the center’s successful launch and contribution to the community’s future prosperity.
