Jay North, famously known for his role as the mischievous child in the television series “Dennis the Menace,” has passed away at the age of 73. North succumbed to colon cancer at his residence in Lake Butler, Florida. His passing was confirmed by his longtime friend Laurie Jacobson and his booking agent Bonnie Vent.
North began his journey to fame at the age of six when he was cast as Dennis, the central character in the CBS sitcom adaptation of Hank Ketcham’s beloved comic strip. The show, set in a serene American suburb, aired on Sunday nights from 1959 until its cancellation in 1963. North’s portrayal of Dennis, often seen in a striped shirt and overalls, was marked by his playful antics that frequently troubled his elderly neighbor George Wilson, portrayed by Joseph Kearns, while his patient parents were played by Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry. The show enjoyed continued popularity through decades of syndication.
Beyond “Dennis the Menace,” North expanded his acting repertoire with appearances in various television series such as “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Lucy Show,” “My Three Sons,” “Lassie,” and even lent his voice to “The Simpsons.” His film credits include roles in “Maya” (1966), “The Teacher” (1974), and “Dickie Robert: Former Child Star” (2003).
He is survived by his third wife, Cindy, and three stepdaughters.
