Local College Student Recounts Harrowing Experience in Pierce County Mass Shooting

A tragic incident unfolded in a Spanaway neighborhood as gunfire erupted at a house party, resulting in the deaths of two teenagers and injuries to four others. The gathering, meant to celebrate a birthday, turned deadly when bullets started flying, causing panic among partygoers. Among those injured was 18-year-old Jazmine Chavez, a college student in the Puget Sound area, who sustained a gunshot wound to her pelvis.

The shooting claimed the lives of Hector Gonzalez Valdez, 19, and Joaquin Ramirez, 15, near the 17800 block of 25th Avenue Court on March 29. A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and unlawful firearm possession. Held at Remann Hall on a $1 million bail, the juvenile’s identity remains undisclosed by court order.

The party, which had been widely advertised on social media, turned chaotic following a fight inside the house. Chavez and her friends were attempting to retrieve keys from a car when gunshots began. Chavez described the traumatic experience of realizing she had been shot and the subsequent anxiety and intrusive thoughts she has endured since the incident.

Pierce County deputies responded to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported disturbances. Chavez expressed dissatisfaction with the response, claiming a lack of urgency and initial disbelief regarding her injuries. However, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office stated that body-camera footage showed deputies promptly attending to Chavez and other victims upon arrival. The footage reportedly contradicts claims of mistreatment.

Chavez underwent multiple surgeries at Tacoma General Hospital and spent two weeks hospitalized. Now recuperating at home, she focuses on daily recovery and pursues her educational goals remotely. Aspiring to become a psychiatrist, Chavez hopes to support children who have faced significant challenges.

To aid in her recovery, a GoFundMe has been established to assist with medical expenses and other necessities.
