A man from Miami Gardens has been charged with kidnapping following an incident that unfolded at a gas station last month. The confrontation reportedly began over a declined food order and escalated into a serious altercation. Police have identified 31-year-old Herbert Lamar McCrea as the individual involved in forcing his girlfriend into a vehicle outside the Westar gas station on Northwest 36th Street.
According to police reports, the event occurred on March 18. Officers responded to a call around 2 p.m. after a witness observed McCrea allegedly grabbing the woman and pushing her into a red Cadillac SUV before driving off. The witness captured an image of the SUV’s license plate, which assisted investigators in locating McCrea.
Surveillance footage from the gas station revealed further details. It showed McCrea arriving at the location just after 1:30 p.m., parking at a pump, and entering the store. After selecting some items, he waited at the register while the victim, who had been outside pumping gas, entered the store and walked towards the back where a small restaurant was situated.
Shortly before 2 p.m., McCrea followed her and engaged in a verbal confrontation. Surveillance footage showed him charging at the woman, forcibly grabbing her, and dragging her back to the SUV. After initially sitting in the passenger seat, McCrea moved to the driver’s side and drove away.
Later that evening, around 7:15 p.m., the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s V.I.P.E.R. unit located the SUV parked in Plantation. The victim was subsequently interviewed and recounted that the argument with McCrea began after a declined transaction for food. She mentioned that McCrea escalated the situation by wanting to drive the car, contrary to her wishes.
Authorities noted that the victim positively identified McCrea in a photo lineup. Detectives later apprehended McCrea and brought him in for questioning. During his interview, McCrea acknowledged a verbal altercation with the victim, though details of his statements were not publicly disclosed.
McCrea faces a charge of kidnapping and is currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with his bond yet to be set.
