MARTA to Restart Five Points Station Transformation Project Next Month

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is set to resume its ambitious transformation project at Five Points Station, beginning on May 17. This development will temporarily impact the entrances at Alabama Street, Broad Street Plaza, and Peachtree Street Station. To accommodate these changes, street-level station, elevator, and bus access will be redirected to Forsyth Street. Importantly, rail service and transfers will continue to operate as scheduled, ensuring minimal disruption to commuters.

The project’s primary objectives include enhancing transit connectivity, bolstering safety measures, and improving customer amenities. The initial phase will involve demolishing and removing the existing concrete canopy. Subsequent phases will focus on constructing a new canopy, refining the centralized bus hub, improving pedestrian connections to Broad Street, and integrating community spaces, public art, and agricultural elements into the station’s design. The estimated budget for this comprehensive project stands at approximately $230 million. Funding sources include the More MARTA Atlanta half-penny sales tax, with contributions of $13.8 million from the State of Georgia, $25 million from the Federal RAISE Grant, and additional support from the MARTA core penny.

Bus Service Impacts Starting May 17

The following bus routes will now have their services relocated to Forsyth Street at Five Points:

  • 3 – Martin Luther King Jr. Drive/Auburn Avenue
  • 40 – Peachtree Street/Downtown
  • 813 – Atlanta University Center
  • 186 – Rainbow Road Drive/South DeKalb

To maintain coverage of Downtown, three bus routes will undergo detours and will no longer stop at Five Points:

  • 26 – Marietta Street/Perry Boulevard
  • 816 – North Highland Avenue

These routes will terminate at alternative stations:

  • Georgia State Station: 186 – Rainbow Road Drive/South DeKalb
  • King Memorial Station: 26 – Marietta Street/Perry Boulevard, 813 – Atlanta University Center
  • Civic Center Station: 816 – North Highland Avenue

Bus routes operated by regional transit partners such as CobbLinc, Ride Gwinnett, and Xpress will continue as planned.

Customer Services Impact Beginning June 6, 2025

As the project progresses, some customer service facilities will temporarily relocate, with detailed location information to be shared in due course. Additionally, restrooms at the station will close, with alternative nearby restroom facilities available at:

  • GWCC/CNN Center (Westbound): “SMART” restrooms with remote access
  • Peachtree Center (Northbound): Restrooms on the north concourse level
  • Georgia State (Eastbound): Restrooms on the lower concourse level
  • West End (Southbound): Restrooms on the lower concourse level

Impact on Daily Life

The transformation project at Five Points Station represents a significant investment in Atlanta’s transit infrastructure, promising long-term benefits for commuters. By enhancing connectivity and safety, the project aims to provide a more efficient and pleasant travel experience for daily transit users. The introduction of new community spaces and public art will also contribute to a more vibrant and engaging atmosphere, potentially attracting more visitors and boosting local businesses.

While the temporary disruptions may pose inconveniences, particularly for individuals reliant on specific bus routes, the strategic planning of detours and service adjustments aims to minimize these impacts. Commuters can expect improved facilities and services upon completion, ultimately enhancing their daily journeys and lifestyle. The project’s commitment to integrating sustainability and community-oriented designs underscores a forward-thinking approach to urban transit development, promising a positive shift in how transportation serves Atlanta’s diverse population.
