Medical Examiner Identifies Armed Man Shot in Pierce County Police Standoff

A recent police standoff in Puyallup culminated in the death of a 29-year-old man, identified as Bret Winn, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s office. The incident occurred on April 5, near the 500 block of Valley Avenue Northeast, where Winn succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The medical examiner has classified his death as a homicide.

The sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting began at 12:25 p.m. when deputies responded to reports of an armed robbery and carjacking at the 10400 block of Portland Avenue East. Shortly after, Tacoma police and firefighters attended to a multi-car accident at South 56th Street and Pacific Avenue. Among the vehicles involved, one matched the description of the stolen car.

According to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, another carjacking was reported nearby, involving the same suspect. Officers located the second stolen vehicle at 12:39 p.m. near East 35th and East D streets, prompting a police pursuit that included Puyallup officers. The chase concluded on Valley Avenue East after officers deployed spike strips to halt the vehicle.

Emerging from the vehicle, Winn was reportedly armed. Officers instructed him to disarm and cease advancing. As Winn approached the officers, gunfire ensued, resulting in his death at the scene, despite efforts by officers and medical personnel to provide aid. No officers were injured during the incident.

Court records indicate that Winn had prior convictions in Pierce County, including second-degree assault in 2022 and third-degree assault in 2020. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is currently investigating the shooting.
