A security guard at a condominium complex in Miami-Dade County was taken into custody on Thursday following an altercation with a senior resident, resulting in a felony charge. The incident was reported to have occurred on March 25 at the Promenade Condominium at Kendale Lakes, situated at 14325 SW 88th St.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detailed that the confrontation began when a 66-year-old man temporarily parked his vehicle in a handicapped spot to unload groceries. Anniel Lorenzo, age 34, who was on duty as a security guard, reportedly approached the man, leading to an argument over the unauthorized use of the handicapped space. Lorenzo subsequently affixed a parking violation sticker to the man’s car.
Following the disagreement, the senior resident proceeded to the main office, intending to lodge a formal complaint. It was during this interaction with the condominium association’s vice president that Lorenzo allegedly confronted the complainant. Authorities described the guard’s approach as aggressive, culminating in him reportedly shoving the resident with his chest and hands, causing the senior to lose balance and almost fall.
In response to this physical altercation, the victim reportedly threw a chair to create a barrier between himself and Lorenzo. The security guard then allegedly grabbed the senior’s right arm, forcing it behind his back, and directed him to the ground. While restrained on the floor, the victim reported that Lorenzo kneed him in the left rib cage.
Subsequently, the senior returned to his apartment to contact law enforcement and later sought medical care for his injuries, which included bruises and abrasions. Law enforcement officials identified and located Lorenzo at his residence on the 14900 block of Southwest 80th Street, where he was arrested on charges of battery against a person aged 65 or older.
A local judge found probable cause for the charges against Lorenzo on Friday, setting his bond at $1,500. Lorenzo remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday.
The Human Angle: Understanding the Impact
This incident underscores the importance of maintaining respectful and calm interactions within community settings, particularly in environments involving mixed-age demographics like condominium complexes. For residents, it highlights the need to be aware of parking regulations and to communicate complaints through the appropriate channels without escalating tensions.
The incident also serves as a reminder for security personnel to exercise restraint and professionalism, even when faced with challenging situations. Communities benefit from security guards who are trained not only in security protocols but also in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Ensuring these skills can foster a safer and more harmonious living atmosphere for all residents.
