Miami-Dade Judge Schedules Trial for Real Estate Mogul Involved in Fatal Boat Crash

A potential trial date has been set for July 14 in the case involving George Pino, a prominent real estate mogul, who is facing charges of felony vessel homicide. These charges are connected to a tragic boating incident that occurred on September 4, 2022, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez near Boca Chita Key. The decision was made by a Miami-Dade judge, although Pino himself was not present at the recent hearing.

According to officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Pino was operating a 29-foot boat on the evening of the incident when he lost control and collided with a channel marker. Initially, Pino faced three second-degree misdemeanor charges, but these were later elevated to a homicide charge following additional witness testimony gathered by prosecutors.

Pino’s legal representative expressed a preference for the mid-July trial date, highlighting the need to accommodate the schedules of numerous witnesses who are students, to ensure the preservation of their testimonies. Although investigators at the time did not suspect alcohol played a role in the crash, Pino refused a voluntary blood test after acknowledging that he had consumed alcohol earlier that evening.

In a related legal development, a judge ordered Pino’s wife in May to pay $16 million to the family of one of the teenagers severely injured in the crash as part of a lawsuit settlement.
