A 20-year-old individual from Miami-Dade’s West End has been charged with second-degree murder following a Thanksgiving altercation that led to the fatal shooting of his cousin. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office reported responding to a shooting incident around 4:30 p.m. on November 28, 2024, at a residence in Kendall.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim, identified as 20-year-old Craig Stroud Jr., lying outside the home with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Stroud was transported to Jackson South Medical Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, where he was later pronounced dead.
The tragic event unfolded at a family gathering at Stroud’s grandmother’s house, intended to celebrate Thanksgiving. Present at the event were several family members, including Isaiah Jaheim Ballard and his brother. Stroud’s arrival quickly escalated into a verbal confrontation with Ballard outside the home.
Attempts by other family members to defuse the situation were unsuccessful, and the argument soon turned physical. Ballard reportedly pushed another relative, inciting a separate altercation. Stroud tried to intervene, leading to a fight between him and Ballard, during which they exchanged punches.
During the altercation, Ballard allegedly produced a firearm. According to witnesses, the two cousins struggled over the weapon before Ballard discharged it, striking Stroud. After the shooting, Ballard did not assist Stroud and instead fled the scene on foot with another relative.
Witnesses recounted that Ballard dismantled the firearm and discarded it in a bushy area while escaping westward toward Southwest 136th Terrace. The following day, Ballard’s mother informed investigators that her son intended to surrender and provide a statement. Ballard also contacted detectives to say he would appear for a statement, although he failed to do so.
On January 13, weeks after the incident, Ballard was arrested on unrelated weapons charges. While in custody, he was taken to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Bureau, where he refused to speak after being advised of his rights.
Investigators established probable cause to charge Ballard with one count of second-degree murder. Jail records confirm that he is currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
