Charges have been filed against a Miami-Dade County mother in Monroe County for her role in allegedly aiding her 15-year-old son after he reportedly fired a gun at a rival in Key Largo. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stated that Cindy Paniagua assisted her son, Jonathan Valerio, on March 8 in evading capture by deputies following the incident.
The incident unfolded at approximately 9:50 p.m. on a Saturday at Key Largo Community Park, where Jonathan fled the scene, leaving behind a 16-year-old victim. Sheriff Rick Ramsay criticized Paniagua’s actions, stating that they set a poor example for other parents and exacerbated the situation.
Paniagua, 37, who resides in Homestead, was aware of the shooting and not only failed to inform law enforcement but also urged others to do the same. The victim sustained a grazing gunshot wound to the hand and additional injuries to his legs caused by shrapnel from a cellphone. He was initially treated at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier before being airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for further trauma care.
During their investigation, sheriff’s office divers discovered Jonathan’s wallet, clothing, and personal items in a canal near the park. Jonathan eventually turned himself in to deputies on March 11 at the Plantation Key jail, leading to his mother’s arrest the following Wednesday.
Inmate records indicated that Paniagua’s occupation is listed as “director,” and her arrest occurred at the park where the shooting took place at 500 St. Croix Place. She faces a charge of being an accessory after the fact, while her son is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
