A public memorial service and mass are scheduled for Wednesday to honor the late City of Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes, who passed away last week at the age of 80. The proceedings will begin with Reyes’ casket passing by Miami City Hall at 10:30 a.m., a tribute to his seven years of service as a member of the city’s legislative body.
The memorial service will take place in the Rotunda at City Hall at 11 a.m., followed by a funeral procession to St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, located at 2987 W. Flagler St. A memorial mass will be held at the church at 12:30 p.m.
Manolo Reyes passed away on Friday after a battle with leukemia. He was first elected to the Miami Commission in November 2017 and was reelected to the District 4 seat, which includes Flagami and Coral Way, in 2019 without opposition.
A statement from the Reyes family expressed profound sadness over his passing. Reyes was remembered for cherishing his family, especially his three grandsons, and for his many friendships throughout the community. He was a fervent advocate for a free and democratic Cuba and was a proud Florida Gator.
Reyes’ dedication to the residents of District 4 was notable, as he considered serving as a City Commissioner to be the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Despite his cancer diagnosis, he remained committed to achieving the goals he set for himself and his city staff. He was known for listening to and advising constituents up until shortly before his recent hospitalization.
Reyes approached his health challenges with the same determination and courage as his political campaigns, characterized by his plain-spoken leadership. His life, marked by unquestioned character and a strong commitment to public service, is celebrated as a significant victory as he reunites with his Lord in Heaven.
In reflecting on his legacy, Reyes wished to be remembered as a man who fulfilled his duties to both family and community, whose word was reliable, and who maintained integrity throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Chacha Reyes; his daughter Meily and her husband Antonio Rios; his son Manny and his wife Adriana Pereira-Reyes; his grandsons Maximo, Matthew, and Daniel; his sisters Mayda Rodriguez and Merle Reyes; along with numerous nieces, extended family, beloved friends, and his dedicated City staff considered his District 4 family. He was preceded in death by his sister Maika Reyes, his mother Eduviges Ortiz, and his father Ernesto “Payes” Reyes, who was his hero and political inspiration.
Community Impact
Manolo Reyes’ passing marks a significant moment for the Miami community, especially for the constituents of District 4. Known for his dedication to public service and his personal engagement with residents, his absence will leave a void in local leadership. The initiatives and policies he championed, particularly those that focused on community development and resident support, will continue to influence the district and serve as a benchmark for future leaders.
His commitment to listening to “the little guy” and addressing the concerns of the less privileged resonated deeply with many, fostering a sense of trust and reliability in his leadership. As the community reflects on his contributions, there is an opportunity for citizens and leaders alike to build upon his legacy of integrity and service, ensuring that Miami continues to grow as a vibrant and inclusive city.
