Ohio First Responder Fatally Struck While Assisting Motorist in Ditch

A tragic incident occurred in Wayne County, Ohio, resulting in the death of a first responder on Friday night. This unfortunate event unfolded when Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and fire crews were alerted to a Ford F-150 that had become stuck in a ditch on Stratton Road at around 10:40 p.m.

Lieutenant Paul Charles Mickolick, aged 43, of the Town and County Fire District, responded to the scene in his personal vehicle to provide assistance. Upon arrival, he parked on the west side of the road near the immobilized pickup truck.

Soon after Mickolick’s arrival, a two-car collision was reported at the same location. A Cadillac CTS, traveling southbound on Stratton Road, veered off the right side of the road, crashing into the ditch. The Cadillac collided with the stationary pickup truck, its driver, and Lieutenant Mickolick.

Emergency medical services swiftly transported both the pickup truck driver and Mickolick to the hospital. Sadly, Mickolick succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was airlifted by a medical helicopter to Akron General Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries.

The Town and County Fire District released a statement on Saturday morning, expressing their sorrow over the loss of Lieutenant Mickolick. He was not only a valued Flight Paramedic with the Cleveland Clinic for 16 years but also dedicated four and a half years to the fire district. His exemplary service and dedication to the community were highlighted, and his legacy will be honored by continuing to serve with courage and compassion.

Details regarding memorial services, department honors, and public support for Mickolick’s family will be shared in the coming days. The community and local media will continue to provide updates on this evolving story.
