Ongoing Investigation into OHS Incident

Odessa High School has lifted its lockdown following the resolution of a security alert involving a student suspected of possessing a weapon. The situation arose when ECISD police assessed a report of a student allegedly seen with a weapon, but investigations revealed no weapon was found.

The ECISD press release indicated that officers conducted a comprehensive search of the school premises, which, due to its size, required significant time to complete. During this period, the school restricted entry for parents and visitors to ensure safety. Notifications were sent to parents estimating student dismissal around 4:00 or 4:15 p.m.

The incident escalated from an initial Secure status, enacted after a report of a gun being flashed by an outsider, to a lockdown when the suspect was reportedly seen re-entering the school. This prompted a more urgent response, leading to the lockdown initiated by the police.

Authorities confirmed that, upon locating the student within the school, no weapon was discovered. Consequently, the lockdown was downgraded to a Hold. Under this protocol, students and staff remained in their current locations while officers verified each area of the campus was secure, allowing for a gradual return to normalcy.

Chief Communications Officer Mike Adkins emphasized the swift and effective police response and reassured the community that there was no actual emergency. The ongoing investigation focuses on clarifying the sequence of events based on witness statements.

Meanwhile, students at Odessa High School faced an unusual day. Freshman David Perez, who was with friends, described the commotion as they heard about the lockdown and police activity. Fellow freshman Eduardo Ortiz recounted a similar experience, noting his anxiety upon hearing sirens and witnessing police officers in bulletproof vests.

Vilma Carrillo, informed about the incident by her granddaughter, expressed relief upon learning that her granddaughter was safe, alleviating her initial fears.
