Oronoco Resident Faces Criminal Vehicular Homicide Charges for Snapchat Use While Driving

An individual from Oronoco has been formally charged following a tragic two-vehicle collision that resulted in the fatality of a resident from Winona, nearly three years ago. Eric Arthur Wittlief, aged 22, faces one charge of criminal vehicular homicide, as filed on April 11 in Winona County. His initial court appearance is arranged for May 14.

The incident transpired on August 9, 2021, at approximately 2:45 p.m. along U.S. Highway 14. Upon their arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers found Wittlief, the operator of a white Ford Ranger, unconscious and suffering from injuries to his jaw and hand. The Minnesota State Patrol conducted an examination of Wittlief’s vehicle and discovered that his cellphone, located on the floor, was actively vibrating. The phone, upon being accessed, showed GPS navigation directed towards Winona, suggesting eastward travel. Text messages on the device indicated communication with an individual in Ettrick, Wisconsin, at 1:27 p.m., in which Wittlief mentioned being delayed and estimated a two-hour journey.

In the other involved vehicle, the driver was a woman accompanied by her husband in the passenger seat. According to her statement, while en route to Stockton, Minnesota, the Ford Ranger veered across the central road divider. Despite her efforts to maneuver away, the vehicle was struck head-on. Her husband suffered severe blunt-force trauma from the collision and succumbed to his injuries shortly after, on August 6, 2021.

A reconstruction report by troopers concluded that Wittlief had crossed the double solid yellow lines into the westbound lane, leading to the accident. The investigation further revealed that a search warrant on his phone uncovered activity from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. On closer inspection, it was determined that Wittlief had been utilizing Facebook Messenger and Snapchat just minutes before the crash, which was deemed a contributing factor to the tragic event.

The Broader Impact

This incident underscores the grave risks associated with distracted driving, particularly concerning mobile phone use while at the wheel. The charges against Wittlief highlight the legal consequences of such actions, emphasizing the need for responsible driving behavior to ensure public safety on the roads.

The case serves as a somber reminder to communities and individuals alike about the importance of adhering to traffic laws and the potential life-altering impacts of negligence. The incident further stresses the necessity for increased awareness and stringent enforcement of regulations against distracted driving, with the aim of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
