Penn State Officials Postpone Decision on Potential Branch Campus Closures

The anticipated decision regarding potential closures of several Penn State University branch campuses has been postponed. The university had initially planned to make an announcement before the spring commencement, but this has now been rescheduled to mid-May.

The timeline for finalizing decisions on campus closures was described as flexible by the university’s president. The delay comes in response to widespread suggestions from the campus community to delay any announcements until after final examinations and commencement ceremonies have concluded.

In mid-May, the Board of Trustees is already scheduled to convene to evaluate closure recommendations. Among the campuses potentially affected by this decision are five branches located in the Pittsburgh area: Beaver, Fayette, Greater Allegheny, Shenango, and New Kensington.

The university acknowledges that the postponement might evoke varied reactions, providing relief to some while causing frustration for others. The decision to delay the announcement is rooted in the belief that stakeholders deserve both clear communication and compassionate consideration.

An exact date for the Board of Trustees’ meeting has not yet been established, and no decisions regarding campus closures will be finalized until board approval is granted.
