Details have emerged regarding the arson fire that occurred early Sunday, leading to the evacuation of the Pennsylvania governor’s family from the official residence in Harrisburg. Governor Josh Shapiro, along with his wife, four children, and two dogs, were alerted and safely evacuated by state police. The fire, which happened shortly after a Passover Seder, has caused significant damage to the residence, estimated to be in the millions. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
A suspect is currently facing charges, while the investigation into the motive continues. Governor Shapiro, who is serving his first term as a Democrat and is considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028, expressed gratitude to the firefighters by hosting a catered lunch to acknowledge their efforts in managing the blaze.
Hours before the fire, the Shapiro family had concluded their Passover Seder. After guests and family members retired to private areas of the house, they went to bed around 1 a.m. An hour later, state troopers alerted the family to the fire. The governor recounted the urgency of waking the children and gathering their dogs to evacuate the residence swiftly.
First responders, including state troopers and Capitol Police, ensured the family’s safety and accounted for everyone present. The night was described as cold and misty, with the family standing outside in pajamas, trying to remain calm during the ordeal. Throughout the event, emergency responders continued to arrive at the scene.
The following morning, Governor Shapiro revisited the site to assess the extent of the damage. He and his wife surveyed both the private family areas and the public spaces used for hosting guests, which had become charred and damaged by the fire.
