A harrowing incident unfolded in a South Beach apartment where a 2-year-old girl was discovered living in deplorable conditions after her parents suffered drug overdoses. The Miami Beach police were alerted when Alberto Medel, the girl’s father, managed to call 911 around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. He was found holding his distressed and unclothed daughter, trying to explain the situation to police officers.
Emergency responders discovered the girl’s mother, Paola Canales, unconscious and nude in the bathtub of their second-floor apartment, located near Pennsylvania Avenue and 16th Street. The child was visibly upset, crying out in Spanish that she was cold, as reported by the police. Medel attempted to dress his daughter but soon lost consciousness and became unresponsive, prompting fire rescue personnel to administer Narcan to counteract potential narcotic overdose effects. Both parents were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital for further treatment.
The conditions inside the apartment shocked the officials on the scene, with dirty clothing, trash, and clutter everywhere. The toddler was clearly in distress, repeatedly asking for food and clothing. A compassionate police officer provided her with food and clothing to help soothe her before taking her into protective custody at the Miami Beach Police Department.
The Florida Department of Children and Families was contacted to assume custody of the child, as there were grave concerns for her safety and well-being. The parents, Medel and Canales, survived the overdoses and were charged with child neglect. They appeared in court on Wednesday and face additional holds from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
