Proposed Transit Bill May Revive Matthews Silver Line Project

The introduction of a new bill in the North Carolina legislature could potentially pave the way for the Silver Line train service to extend to Matthews. This development follows the filing of a bill by Rep. Tricia Cotham, aimed at introducing a sales tax referendum. Matthews Mayor John Higdon has expressed opposition to the bus rapid transit plan. However, he commended Cotham’s initiative, appreciating the increased flexibility in the proposed funding model. While the full implications of the bill are still under review, Higdon acknowledged the bill as a promising start and expressed openness to future discussions on funding transit needs within Mecklenburg County.

The proposed bill is yet to pass through committee stages and a full House vote before it can advance to the Senate for consideration.
