Public Invited to Open House for Proposed Maplewood-Woodbury-Afton Trail Project

Residents in central Washington County will soon have the opportunity to learn more about a proposed multi-use trail at an open house event later this month. The planned paved trail, tentatively named the Battle Creek-St. Croix Regional Trail, is set to extend approximately 11 miles, connecting the communities of Maplewood, Woodbury, and Afton.

The trail aims to link users to significant regional attractions, including the Central Greenway and St. Croix Valley regional trails, Battle Creek Regional Park, and the St. Croix River. In response to community feedback expressing appreciation for the area’s existing trails, county officials are optimistic that this new trail will further enhance the regional trail network.

Efforts are underway to establish a comprehensive vision for the trail’s future, encompassing potential routes, land requirements, features, and maintenance strategies. This year’s objectives include visioning, site analysis, community engagement, data collection, route development, and plan drafting. Implementation funding will await adoption of the plan by the Washington County Board and the Metropolitan Council.

The county is keen to receive input from residents regarding their preferences for the trail’s features and potential names, as the current name is only provisional. The open house event is scheduled for April 21, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Woodbury City Hall. Additional details can be found at washingtoncountymn.gov/BattleCreekStCroix.

The Potential Impact on the Community

The introduction of the Battle Creek-St. Croix Regional Trail stands to offer considerable benefits to the local community. By enhancing connectivity between towns and major regional attractions, residents and visitors alike will have improved access to recreational opportunities, encouraging healthier lifestyles and fostering a greater appreciation of the natural environment.

The trail is expected to stimulate economic activity in the area by attracting outdoor enthusiasts and tourists, potentially benefiting local businesses. Furthermore, by incorporating feedback from residents during the planning stages, the trail can better serve community needs, promoting greater civic engagement and a sense of ownership among locals.
