Report Highlights Threats from Right-Wing Extremists to LGBTQ-Affirming Religious Communities

Since June 2022, over 150 incidents targeting affirming religious communities in the United States have been documented, highlighting an alarming trend where extremists focus not only on LGBTQ+ individuals but also on inclusive faith-based spaces. The data, released by GLAAD’s ALERT Desk, underscores a rising wave of violence and harassment against churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples that advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion. These incidents encompass death threats, vandalism, harassment, attempted arson, physical assaults, and bomb threats.

Initially, in early 2024, GLAAD reported tracking more than 60 such incidents. Since then, over 90 additional attacks have emerged, bringing the total incidents to 151. As faith communities celebrate their holy days, GLAAD aims to highlight leaders who ensure inclusive spaces for all. Amid heightened divisiveness, building bridges is vital for those impacted by hate, including victims of anti-LGBTQ hate, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and racism.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C., became prominent after addressing President Donald Trump’s treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants in a sermon at the National Prayer Service. Her call for mercy and compassion followed Trump’s executive order revoking federal recognition of transgender and nonbinary people. The sermon led to backlash, with Trump demanding an apology that Budde refused to give, citing the lived experiences of those she serves. Despite receiving threats, Budde noted significant support from the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

The GLAAD report reveals Budde’s experience is not isolated. In New Jersey, the First Congregational United Church of Christ faced death threats after being falsely accused of supporting “pedophilia” for displaying a Pride flag. In response to the threats, Rev. Mark Suriano emphasized the overwhelming support received despite the terror and violence. In Connecticut, anti-LGBTQ graffiti targeted Immanuel Congregational Church, and in Michigan, police thwarted a plot for a mass shooting aimed at LGBTQ+ individuals, religious sites, schools, and hospitals.

As anti-LGBTQ rhetoric escalates nationwide, driven by right-wing political attacks and disinformation, GLAAD urges reporting of such incidents to its ALERT Desk to combat the spread of hate and violence.

The Broader Impact and Ramifications

The increasing number of anti-LGBTQ+ incidents targeting religious communities reflects growing societal tensions and highlights the challenges faced by both LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies. For communities striving to create inclusive spaces, these attacks risk instilling fear and insecurity, potentially deterring open support for LGBTQ+ rights. The safety and well-being of community members may be compromised, affecting their freedom to express their identities and beliefs.

For individuals, the rise in such incidents can exacerbate feelings of vulnerability and marginalization, impacting mental health and community cohesion. These attacks not only threaten personal safety but also challenge the broader societal goal of fostering acceptance and unity. Moreover, religious organizations committed to inclusivity may face increased pressure, requiring heightened security measures and community support to continue their advocacy undeterred.

On a wider scale, the persistent divisiveness can strain social harmony, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to bridge gaps and promote understanding. Addressing misinformation and fostering dialogues across differing viewpoints are crucial steps toward reducing hostility and building a more inclusive society. These efforts are essential in creating a future where diversity is celebrated, and all individuals, regardless of their identity or beliefs, can coexist peacefully.
