After a month-long disappearance, a dog was successfully rescued from a storm drain in Western Massachusetts, where she had been trapped without the means to escape. This rescue operation coincided with the West Springfield Fire Department’s response to a car fire on Interstate 91 South. The vehicle was engulfed in flames, which led to a ruptured gas tank spilling gasoline onto the road and threatening to seep into nearby storm drains. The driver of the vehicle was hospitalized with burns and smoke inhalation but is expected to recover.
Once the fire was under control, firefighters turned their attention to assessing the storm drains for any potential contamination from the spilled gasoline. It was during this inspection that they discovered the missing dog, Ally.
Ally had been reported missing over a month prior by her owners to the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center. She had vanished from the Forest Park area, and how she ended up in the storm drain near the highway remains a mystery. This unexpected discovery would not have been possible without the alertness of the Massachusetts State Police Officers and the West Springfield Fire Department, who played a crucial role in ensuring Ally’s survival.
Now safely reunited with her relieved owners, Ally is receiving the care she needs. Her family plans to take her to the veterinarian to ensure there are no health issues resulting from her extended time in the storm drain. Additionally, Ally will be groomed and bathed to restore her to full health, according to updates shared by the animal control center.
