Severe Storms Cause Chaos Across Hawaiian Islands

A flash flood warning affected Oahu and Maui County throughout much of Friday afternoon, with certain regions experiencing intense rainfall of up to 1 to 3 inches per hour. Heavy rain, flooding, lightning, and thunder swept across the Hawaiian Islands before subsiding early in the evening. Moderate tradewinds are expected to return today and continue through the weekend, with lingering showers impacting the state. However, the National Weather Service has indicated that a new storm system is anticipated to approach early next week, potentially causing further heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from Tuesday to Thursday.

A winter weather advisory remains in place for the summits of Hawaii Island, with snowfall predictions of up to 2 inches expected by 6 a.m. today. During the 24-hour period ending at 3:45 p.m. Friday, rain gauges recorded substantial precipitation, with 10.6 inches on Kauai’s Mount Waialeale, 6.7 inches at Poamoho near Wahiawa on Oahu, and nearly 3 inches in Haiku, Maui.

The City and County of Honolulu reported the reopening of the intersection at Kamehameha Highway and Waikane Valley Road around 3:40 p.m. Friday, after its closure earlier in the day due to flooding.
