A man from Gwinnett County is set to remain in custody without the option of bail after being accused of shooting two young brothers with a BB gun. This incident has left one of the children with a BB lodged in his head almost a month later. The boys, aged six and seven, were reportedly shot while they were returning home from their school bus along Margate Court, close to Lawrenceville, on March 24.
According to Gwinnett County police, the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Shihchen Chou, allegedly opened fire with the BB gun because he claimed the children were traversing his yard. This information was detailed in an arrest warrant. The attack resulted in one child being struck in the back of his head and his brother being hit in the neck. The six-year-old victim is now slated for surgery next week to extract the BB, as confirmed by his mother.
The boys’ mother, Estefani Gonzalez, expressed concern over her son’s lingering pain due to the BB lodged in his head. A local resident, Zulma Navarrete, whose own son was also targeted but not hit, attended a court hearing alongside Gonzalez to monitor developments regarding Chou’s potential release. Chou waived his preliminary hearing, ensuring he remains in jail without bond until his next court date.
Navarrete revealed that the shooting occurred mere minutes after the children disembarked from the school bus, suspecting the act was intentional. She dismissed the notion that it was an accident or a playful gesture. Chou faces charges including first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and two counts of battery. Prosecutors have argued that Chou poses a threat to the community, a sentiment echoed by Navarrete.
