A South Florida resident is facing serious charges in New Jersey after allegedly attempting to transport a large cache of weapons on an Amtrak train earlier this year. The New Jersey Attorney General announced that Jeffrey O. Kennerk, 34, from Fort Lauderdale, has been indicted on multiple weapons-related charges.
The situation unfolded on January 3 when a New Jersey Transit Police officer discovered an abandoned suitcase with a black and white zebra print outside a McDonald’s at Newark Penn Station. Upon inspection, the suitcase revealed a Glock handgun case containing a Girsan Regard MC handgun, fully loaded with an 18-round magazine. Alongside, authorities found an AR-style magazine, several boxes of ammunition, and a black AK-47, which had one round in the chamber and numerous loaded magazines.
Surveillance footage captured Kennerk boarding a train headed for Virginia. However, police intercepted the train in Trenton, where they questioned him. Kennerk presented a valid Amtrak ticket for a different train, claiming he had mistakenly boarded the wrong one. Before the train’s departure, officers at Trenton were alerted about Kennerk as a person of interest in weapons possession from Newark and apprehended him before he could board another Amtrak train.
Subsequently, in Kennerk’s possession on the train, authorities discovered an AR-15 rifle, numerous magazines, rounds of ammunition, and several handguns. During the removal of the rifle from the suitcase, officers noted handkerchiefs wrapped around the trigger guard. While attempting to safely disengage the weapon, the gun discharged without trigger engagement, suggesting it might have been booby-trapped.
The Chief of the New Jersey State Police commended the officers for preventing a potential tragedy. Attorney General Matthew Platkin praised the exemplary police work and expressed concern about the potential destinations of Kennerk and the weapons if not intercepted. The authorities are still investigating Kennerk’s intentions with the firearms and ammunition.

The indictment of Jeffrey O. Kennerk in New Jersey underscores the ongoing challenges that law enforcement faces in preventing illegal firearm transport. This incident has significant implications for public safety and security, especially in densely populated areas where the consequences of such actions could be catastrophic.
For residents and travelers, this event highlights the importance of vigilance and the role of law enforcement in maintaining safety in public transit systems. The quick response by the officers serves as a reminder of the critical need for robust security measures at transportation hubs to prevent potential threats. Such incidents may catalyze further discussions on strengthening security protocols and improving surveillance to ensure the safety of the general public.
