Starting in May: REAL ID Required for Domestic Flights

The enforcement of the REAL ID Act is set to take effect next month, impacting adults in the United States who plan to board domestic commercial flights. This federal requirement mandates the possession of a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, identifiable by a yellow star in the upper right corner. In Florida, these compliant IDs have been issued since 2010. In addition to air travel, the REAL ID will be necessary for access to certain federal facilities, including military bases.

The REAL ID law originated from a 9/11 Commission recommendation and was passed by Congress in 2005. However, its implementation has faced significant delays over the years, with the initial deadline set for 2008. The Department of Homeland Security granted the most recent extension in 2023, establishing the new compliance deadline as May 7.

Understanding the Impact

  • Travelers will need to ensure their identification is compliant with REAL ID standards to avoid disruptions to their travel plans.
  • Access to federal facilities, such as military bases, will require REAL ID-compliant identification, affecting employees and visitors.
  • State motor vehicle departments may experience increased demand as residents update their identification to meet the new standards.
  • Individuals who have not yet obtained a REAL ID may face long wait times or need to gather additional documentation to update their IDs.
  • The implementation emphasizes the importance of national security measures and compliance with federal regulations for travelers and facility access.
