Concerns are mounting in East Boston after a teenager was injured in front of a barbershop shortly after classes concluded for the day. The incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Bennington Street near Brooks Street. Initial reports to the police indicated a stabbing, but it was later clarified as a shooting involving a juvenile.
Witnesses reported that the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted, involving a teenager who had a gun in his pocket. The teenager, a local student, had been inside El Coro Barbershop, waiting for a friend to finish a haircut. According to eyewitness accounts, the firearm discharged in his pocket, wounding his thigh shortly after he exited the establishment.
Surveillance footage depicted the teenager bent over in pain, attempting to re-enter El Coro Barbershop. An employee quickly reacted by running outside to apply a tourniquet, which helped to control the bleeding. The injuries sustained by the teenager were described by police as non-life-threatening.
The shooting caused considerable concern among community members, especially since it took place less than 45 minutes after the school day ended. Residents are questioning how long the firearm had been in the teen’s possession, given the circumstances described by those who were present.
Local resident David Connolly expressed his worries, noting that many children, from junior high to high school, frequent the area. The sight of blood on the street as children were leaving school added to the distress.
Efforts to obtain remarks from Boston Public Schools have not yet yielded a response.
Community Impact
This unfortunate incident highlights significant concerns regarding youth access to firearms and the potential dangers they pose within communities. Residents of East Boston are likely experiencing heightened anxiety over the safety of their neighborhood, especially given the proximity to educational institutions and areas frequented by young people. Such events can lead to increased calls for measures to address gun safety and secure environments for students.
Parents and guardians may feel compelled to discuss safety and firearm awareness with their children, emphasizing the importance of reporting any similar incidents or potential threats. The incident also underscores the need for community engagement and collaboration with law enforcement and local organizations to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
