The United States may soon reconsider its pursuit of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine if significant progress is not achieved in the coming days. This statement follows remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Paris, where intensive discussions unfolded among officials from the United States, Ukraine, and Europe.
Rubio highlighted the constructive nature of these talks, which reportedly resulted in an outline for potential steps toward achieving peace. French authorities are preparing for another round of discussions, anticipated to take place in London shortly, with expectations that Rubio will attend.
The Trump administration has been endeavoring to facilitate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. However, these efforts have yet to yield a halt in hostilities. Rubio emphasized the urgency of determining within days if a peace agreement is feasible in the forthcoming weeks.
France recently hosted pivotal discussions regarding Ukraine’s security—marking the first such meeting since President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The gathering underscores European concerns about Trump’s possible inclination toward closer relations with Russia. Rubio, alongside presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, has spearheaded U.S. initiatives aimed at securing peace, with several negotiation rounds already conducted in Saudi Arabia. Witkoff has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin three times during this process, as noted by Rubio.
The challenge remains that Moscow has not agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire championed by Trump and approved by Ukraine. Russia’s agreement is contingent upon Ukraine ceasing its mobilization efforts and halting Western arms supplies, conditions that Ukraine has firmly rejected.
