The traditional ecumenical Procession of the Cross took place on a chilly Friday evening, with Utahns of various faiths and community members gathering in Salt Lake City to commemorate Good Friday. This solemn ceremony began at the Cathedral of the Madeleine and concluded at the Cathedral at St. Mark’s, marking a significant event in the religious calendar.

During the procession, participants are asked, “Who would carry the cross of Christ?” Each time, volunteers eagerly step forward, demonstrating their commitment to this revered tradition. The procession symbolizes the journey Jesus Christ took while bearing the cross before his crucifixion, and it has been a unifying event for multiple faith communities in Salt Lake City every Good Friday since 1983.

Throughout Utah, various congregations are hosting additional events this weekend to observe the religious significance of this period. The Procession of the Cross is a poignant reminder of the shared spiritual heritage and community spirit that brings people together during this time. The solemn moments of the procession were captured by Deseret News photojournalist Brice Tucker, who documented the event’s profound atmosphere.
