A Freeport man has been sentenced to the maximum penalty for attempted predatory criminal sexual assault involving a victim under 13 years old. A judge in Whiteside County imposed a 15-year prison term on LeAndrew Adams, following his conviction for the 2023 crime. The judge further stipulated that this sentence would be served consecutively to a three-year sentence Adams received for a separate incident while he was in custody, thereby extending his time in prison.
Adams, aged 22, faced additional sentencing after he was found guilty of attempting to sexually assault a 12-year-old girl near Sterling’s Washington Elementary School. The jury did not convict him on other charges related to this case. However, his criminal past, which includes a conviction for attempted car hijacking and a domestic battery charge, was cited as a factor in determining the severity of his sentence.
The court proceedings revealed a disturbing sequence of events. In April 2023, Adams allegedly lured the young girl into a secluded area near a playground where he attempted the assault. The victim, now 14, testified about the encounter, recounting how she met Adams and exchanged messages before the incident. Despite the defense contesting her account as inconsistent, the court upheld the jury’s guilty verdict.
During the sentencing, Adams’ defense highlighted his troubled background, including his experiences in foster care and life on the streets, in an attempt to seek leniency. However, the judge prioritized community safety, emphasizing Adams’ pattern of violent behavior and the impact on the victim.
The victim delivered a powerful impact statement, detailing the emotional and psychological trauma she endured as a result of the attempted assault. Her testimony and bravery in escaping the situation were recognized as pivotal in preventing further harm.
Ultimately, the court underscored the significance of the victim’s courage in influencing the outcome of the case, highlighting the importance of accountability in crimes of this nature. Adams did not provide a statement before his sentencing was finalized.
