Baylee Aguilar, aged 16, is set to make history this week by becoming the second youngest graduate of the University of South Florida with a degree in biology.
Baylee Aguilar, despite not yet reaching the typical age for driving, is achieving a significant academic milestone by graduating from the University of South Florida (USF) at just 16 years old. She will receive her bachelor’s degree in biology. Aguilar’s educational journey has been anything but ordinary.
Her academic accomplishments began early, with her graduating from high school at the age of 13. By 15, she had already obtained an associate degree. Aguilar credits the Florida Virtual School flex program for allowing her to accelerate her education. “I did Florida Virtual School flex program until about 11th grade, and at that point, I could just go as fast as I wanted,” Aguilar explained. She noted that her ability to work at her own pace and without taking breaks enabled her rapid progress.
Attending college at such a young age did not present the challenges one might expect. Rather than feeling out of place among older peers, Aguilar found the community at USF to be welcoming. “It wasn’t hard at all,” she stated, emphasizing the encouragement and support she received from fellow students and staff. This supportive environment at USF provided motivation throughout her studies.
Aguilar is already focused on her future endeavors. She plans to apply to eight veterinary schools, aspiring to become a veterinarian. When reflecting on her achievements, she humbly asserts, “I’m not a genius. I’m not like the most brilliant person or anything. It’s not a matter of how smart you are.” Aguilar attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her mother, who encouraged her not only academically but also in her personal development.
Baylee Aguilar’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the importance of supportive communities in achieving one’s goals. As she embarks on her next journey toward a career in veterinary medicine, her path inspires others to pursue their dreams, regardless of age.
