33-Year-Old Driver Charged in Fatal Miami-Dade Crash

A tragic incident in southwest Miami-Dade has led to the arrest of a 33-year-old man on charges of vehicular homicide following a deadly crash in November.

Michael Anthony Smith, a resident of Cutler Bay, was detained Monday at the Florida Highway Patrol headquarters in Doral. The arrest stems from a fatal crash that took place on November 26 at around 6 p.m., north of 232nd Street along Southwest 112th Avenue.

Authorities reported that Smith was driving an Audi when he hit 14-year-old Lazaro Martinez, who was walking home with a 10-year-old companion. The collision was so forceful that Martinez was thrown over 100 feet, causing horror at the scene as his body parts were spread across a significant area.

The younger child, who witnessed the tragic event, informed police that the Audi was speeding before it hit Martinez. Data retrieved from the vehicle confirmed these claims and revealed even more details on the reckless driving. Electronic records indicated the car was traveling at 81 mph in a zone limited to 40 mph. Additionally, the vehicle was accelerating at full capacity upon impact.

Despite the somber atmosphere, there are also ongoing concerns about road safety in the area. Locals have pointed out the inadequate lighting conditions prevalent in the residential streets. Smith himself confessed to being familiar with the locality, yet this knowledge did not prevent the fatal outcome.

As the investigation progresses, Smith has been officially removed from the jail’s online database as of Friday morning. Meanwhile, the community mourns the untimely death of a young boy, with many calling for enhanced safety measures in the region.

The arrest of Michael Anthony Smith underlines the severe consequences of reckless driving and highlights the need for improved safety measures in residential areas. Such tragic events not only devastate families but also leave lasting scars on the community. Authorities continue to investigate, urging drivers to prioritize safety and caution on the road.
