Adoptable Pets Highlighted Ahead of Major Fundraiser in Broward

The Humane Society of Broward County is turning the spotlight on adoptable pets such as Gabbana, a bright and lively two-year-old dog, as they ramp up for their most significant fundraising event of the year.

The VCA Walk for the Animals event, scheduled for February 1, aims to generate over $500,000 to support the shelter’s commitment to caring for homeless and abandoned animals. Gabbana, a 35-pound dog known for her tricks, was featured during a segment promoting the shelter. Described as “a very cuddly, very playful, and well-trained dog,” Gabbana demonstrated her abilities on Local 10 News by following commands like “sit,” “high five,” and even rolling over. “She’s just that smart,” said Cherie Wachter from the Humane Society of Broward, adding, “If you take her home, you get to tell all your friends you taught her that.”

Gabbana’s journey underscores a common issue faced by many shelter animals. Her former family had to move unexpectedly and could no longer keep her. Despite these challenges, Gabbana remains a friendly and energetic dog who enjoys walks, meeting new people, and playing with toys. “Sadly, her family had to move unexpectedly, so they gave her up,” a representative explained. She is used to going for walks three times a day and has been friendly with other dogs she encounters.

Wachter emphasized Gabbana’s potential as an ideal family dog, particularly for active households willing to engage her in various activities. “She’s so smart and treat-motivated. There’s so much potential for her,” Wachter stated. “She could even be trained for agility or as an animal-assisted therapy dog, visiting nursing homes and hospitals.” As Gabbana awaits adoption, the shelter is also preparing for its key event, the VCA Walk for the Animals. Held at the Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, the event brings together animal lovers and their pets. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 9 a.m.

Participants who contribute $150 or more will receive an official event t-shirt. Even smaller donations are appreciated. “Our average donation is probably about $25, but any amount is appreciated,” Wachter noted. “If I can set up a page and send it out, you can do it too because I’m not that tech-savvy.” The event promises a day of unity as dog lovers and supporters come together to make an impact for animals in need. Local 10′s Jacey Birch will host the event, which includes vendors, activities, and opportunities to meet adoptable pets like Gabbana.

The Humane Society hopes that Gabbana will soon find a loving home. “This is the kind of dog that can really melt everyone’s heart,” the shelter commented. For those interested in adopting Gabbana or learning about other animals, the Humane Society of Broward County’s website is the place to visit.
