ALBION, MI – A 44-year-old man was taken into custody Sunday morning following a high-speed pursuit that resulted in damage to a patrol vehicle and a tactical standoff involving the Calhoun County Special Response Team. The incident began at approximately 10:02 a.m. on March 1, when an officer with the Albion Department of Public Safety attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling at twice the posted speed limit on Haven Road, according to departmental reports.
Authorities state that the driver refused to yield, leading officers on a chase spanning several blocks. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly rammed the pursuing officer’s vehicle before abandoning his own car and fleeing on foot. Police reported observing a handgun in the driver’s possession as he ran into a residence in the 500 block of W. Erie Street.
According to the Albion Department of Public Safety, family members attempted to persuade the suspect to surrender, but were unsuccessful. Due to the report of a visible firearm, the Calhoun County Special Response Team was deployed to the scene. Investigators obtained a search warrant and located the suspect hiding in a camper on the property. He was arrested without further incident, though police noted that no firearm was recovered at the time of the arrest.
