A brutal attack on an Amazon delivery driver in Fort Lauderdale could have been life-threatening, according to the driver’s attorney.
On December 7, Damian Marquez was on a delivery route in the 1100 block of Northwest 10th Terrace when he was unexpectedly attacked. As he was performing his duties, he heard a noise resembling air escaping and discovered that one of the truck’s tires was flat. Attorney Raul De La Heria explained that the assailant had slashed the tire to incapacitate Marquez’s vehicle before launching the assault.
This attacker not only stabbed Marquez but also attempted to rob him. De La Heria recounted how the assailant initially demanded the truck’s keys and Marquez’s personal possessions. However, before Marquez could respond, the attacker used a taser on him, then brutally beat and stabbed him seven times, targeting several critical areas such as the shoulder, leg, abdomen, and chest. The attacker narrowly missed vital organs, with one wound missing the liver by mere millimeters and causing a collapsed lung.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has since apprehended Curtis Gardner, the 33-year-old suspect, charging him with serious offenses including felony attempted murder and armed carjacking. Surveillance footage from nearby properties captured Marquez’s desperate plea for help, highlighting his search for assistance immediately after the attack. Despite his injuries, Marquez managed to reach a convenience store where staff promptly called emergency services, likely saving his life.
De La Heria mentioned Marquez was discharged from the hospital a few days following the incident but continues to suffer from his injuries. The assault left him with significant pain, not only from the stab wounds but also from being physically beaten. The impact on Marquez’s overall well-being has been profound, reflecting the severity of the attack.
