A tragic incident unfolded near Miami International Airport on Thanksgiving morning, resulting in the arrest of a man linked to a deadly hit-and-run accident.
The unfortunate event took place shortly before 4 a.m. near 2100 Northwest 42nd Avenue. Surveillance footage from Miami International Airport reportedly captured the victim walking southbound across the inside eastbound lane when a gray Kia K5, allegedly driven by 38-year-old Gerson Jean, collided with the pedestrian. The impact was forceful enough to vault the victim onto the roadway.
Following the collision, the vehicle left the scene, failing to offer assistance or contact emergency services. As per authorities, the victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition and later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.
On Wednesday, law enforcement located the Kia at a Lauderhill body shop, showing signs of damage consistent with the collision reported. Subsequently, the car was taken into evidence by the Miami-Dade Police and stored securely.
In a turn of events, Gerson Jean was apprehended at the same body shop on Friday. Authorities requested his cooperation, and he willingly went to the Miami-Dade Police Department headquarters. Post-Miranda, Jean provided a statement regarding his involvement in the incident.
Following his statement, Jean was formally arrested and charged, later being transported to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without incident.
This incident highlights the critical need for road safety and the importance of rendering aid in accident scenarios. The swift action by law enforcement in locating the suspect and vehicle was key in providing justice for the victim.
