An off-duty ATF agent was seriously injured following an attempt to break up a fight at a Riverview bowling alley on Friday night.
The incident took place in the parking lot of The Alley at Southshore, where the agent was spending time with his family. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the agent intervened in a physical altercation, resulting in him being shot in the chest.
The suspect, identified as Christopher Smith, age 18, was apprehended seven hours later at a nearby residence. Investigators have charged Smith with several offenses, including first-degree attempted murder with a firearm, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, tampering with evidence, and carrying a concealed firearm.
Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer highlighted the seriousness of the incident, emphasizing the unacceptability of violent acts in family-friendly environments such as bowling alleys. ‘We commend the ATF agent for risking his life to prevent further violence,’ stated Maurer. ‘Our thoughts are with the agent during this challenging time.’
The injured officer was promptly treated at the scene and subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further care. His condition has been described as serious, underscoring the gravity of the encounter. The community is urged to keep him in their thoughts as he recovers.
This case remains under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining public safety.
The Riverview incident underscores the unpredictable nature of public safety challenges, even in typically secure environments. As more details emerge, community support remains crucial for the recovery of those affected, including the injured ATF agent.
