Authorities have identified a 23-year-old Fresno man who died following a two-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck on Clovis Avenue earlier this month, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that the deceased was Michael Molano. The fatal incident occurred on January 18, 2026, on Clovis Avenue, south of Golden State Boulevard.
According to the CHP investigation, a 40-year-old male was operating a 2021 Freightliner northbound on Clovis Avenue. Investigators stated that as the driver attempted to execute a U-turn to proceed southbound, Molano, driving a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup southbound, collided with the truck’s trailer.
Officials noted that heavy fog conditions were present at the time of the crash. Following the impact, the pickup truck became lodged underneath the trailer and was subsequently engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Freightliner pulled to the right shoulder after feeling the collision. Emergency responders pronounced Molano dead at the scene due to fatal injuries sustained in the fire. The driver of the commercial vehicle was reported as uninjured.
CHP officials indicated that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
Traffic Safety Investigation
The investigation into this incident highlights the critical dangers posed by limited visibility conditions, such as heavy fog, in the San Joaquin Valley. While the California Highway Patrol has ruled out alcohol as a factor, the inquiry likely continues into the specific mechanics of the U-turn maneuver and vehicle speeds relative to visibility at the time. Traffic safety officials frequently review such collisions to assess roadway conditions and U-turn permissibility in commercial zones to mitigate future fatal interactions between passenger vehicles and heavy transport trucks.
